The Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) is a Regional Seas Programme for the East Asian Seas region. COBSEA is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its secretariat is located in Bangkok, Thailand. COBSEA is aiming to strengthen regional cooperation on coastal and marine environmental issues in the East Asian Seas region. In 2006, COBSEA initiated a regional activity on marine litter.
COBSEA has ten member countries. These include Australia, Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The Clean Up East Asian Seas campaign
The UNEP COBSEA Secretariat is now organizing the Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008. The Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008 is a part of the global and regional initiatives:
The Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008 will involve national and local participating organizations among the COBSEA member countries (see map). Participating organizations are requested to register their activities here.
Report your results!
Participating organizations are requested to report the results from their cleanup activities to the UNEP COBSEA Secretariat using the OC ICC data collection cards. This is important in order to further improve the knowledge about marine litter in our oceans. Download the OC ICC data cards here. After the completion of your activity, please send your ICC summary cards to the UNEP COBSEA Secretariat.

The Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008 will not only improve the health of the ocean but, by making records on debris being found, this event will also provide important data on the types, quantity and location of marine litter. Together with data recorded in other parts of the region and worldwide this will contribute to an ongoing effort to understand the problem of marine debris better.
The 2nd COBSEA Marine Litter Workshop and Cleanup Campaign
The Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008 will be celebrated by media, government officials among the COBSEA member countries and international experts at the “2nd COBSEA Marine Litter Workshop and Clean Up Campaign” in September 2008.
The event will be co-hosted by the UNEP COBSEA Secretariat and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand, i.e. its Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and its Pollution Control Department.
