Coastal Clean-Up Day in Thailand

505 volunteers participated in a coastal clean-up campaign in Koh Lanta Thailand the 15 September 2007. The clean-up campaign took place in four beaches: Lang Sod beach, Klong Dao beach, Long beach and Klong Nin. The volunteers included 420 local participants and 85 participants from Bangkok. The cleanup campaign was organized with collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center under COBSEA's Green Fins activity. During the coastal clean-up campaign, more than 3,000 kg of debris was collected in these four beaches.

205 volunteers participated in a coastal cleanup day including both underwater and beach activities the 16 September 2006. The cleanup day was organized by Phuket Dive Society and local residents with collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center under the COBSEA's Green Fin activity. More than 2,000 kg of debris such as fishing nets, bottles, tires and plastic bags were collected at three sites in Phuket, Thailand.

Underwater Clean-up at Ko Khai Nok
Two boats (Dive Asia and Sea Bees) with 62 divers, six of whom were the staff of Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), participated in the underwater clean-up at Ko Khai Nok. Three mooring buoys were installed in front of the famous beach to encourage boat operators to avoid unnecessary damage to the fragile underwater environment by using moorings instead of anchors. In addition, about 290 kg of debris was removed. The debris included old fishing nets and ropes, used glass and plastic bottles and other debris that had been discarded by beach goers.

Underwater Clean-up at Ko Hae or Coral Island
Two dive boats (Sea Fun Divers and West Coast Divers) with 55 divers participated in an underwater clean-up at Ko Hae. In just one dive they removed an unbelievable 760 kg. of debris. The debris included fishing gear, kitchen utensils, batteries, paint pots, thinner canisters, used brushes and even a huge part of a broken longtail boat.

Beach clean-up at Ko Hae or Coral Island
The biggest success was scored by the team involved in the Ko Hae or Coral Island beach clean-up. Under the guidance of two dive masters, the team of 88 volunteers collected an astonishing 1000 kg of debris. They removed everything from cigarette buds, plastic bags, paper waste, bottles, beer and soda cans and all sorts of other things that the beach goers had discarded on the beautiful beach.
