8-9 December 2014: Regional Conclusion Workshop of UNEP/COBSEA MFF Coastal Erosion Project, Samut Songkram, Thailand.

The event, which will serve as a "concluding event" of the project, will report to UNEP, MFF and participating countries the accomplishments and outcomes of the project particularly the national assessments on coastal erosion and the implementation of pilot interventions including discussions on the next steps for implementation. The workshop will also provide opportunity for project partners from Pakistan and Thailand to meet and share with their counterparts their experiences and lessons learned in the implementation of the project and its activities.

2-5 November 2014: UNEP/COBSEA MFF Green Fins Project Activities Implementation, Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Upon invitation of the Institute of Oceanography, the National Partner Institution in Vietnam, COBSEA Secretariat together with the Reef-World Foundation participated in the implementation of project activities in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Mr. Reynaldo Molina of COBSEA Secretariat joined the education campaign for boat captains and crew as well as met with IO officials and other relevant national and local authorities on the integration of Green Fins approach into existing national and local laws and regulations governing tourism industries in Vietnam. A draft action plan on Green Fins integration and sustainability was prepared and presented which was considered by the national and local authorities.

25-28 October 2014: 11th Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF), Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

COBSEA Secretariat participated in the 11th Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) in Cambodia. Representatives from MFF member countries, donors and development partners attended the meeting to update and discuss the MFF programme, which includes three Regional Grant Projects implemented by UNEP/COBSEA. MFF is a partnership-based initiative promoting investment in coastal ecosystems for sustainable development, providing a collaborative platform to help countries, sectors and agencies in the MFF region tackle the growing challenges to coastal sustainability.

19 August 2014: COBSEA First Extra-Ordinary Intergovernmental Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand.

Further to Resolution 1 adopted at the 21st Intergovernmental Meeting, UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat organized the First Extra-Ordinary Intergovernmental Meeting (IGM) of the Coordinating Body of the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) where representatives of Member States agreed on the sustainability of COBSEA and the need to reach the increased targeted budget of Trust Fund contributions.

The meeting adopted a resolution reaffirming the long term sustainability of COBSEA as the primary consideration for any decision regarding the hosting of the COBSEA Secretariat, and reiterating that long term sustainability requires all the participating countries meet the increased annual target budget, as agreed in Resolution 1 of the 21st IGM.

27-30 May 2014: Regional Forum on Solutions for Oceans, Coasts and Human Well-Being in Asia and the Pacific, Cebu, Philippines.

COBSEA Secretariat participated in the Regional Forum on Solutions for Oceans, Coasts and Human Well-Being in Asia and the Pacific, where policy-makers and practitioners from 17 countries in Asia and the Pacific met to exchange experiences on marine and coastal management and governance.

The forum tested an innovative approach to sharing “solutions” where twenty five (25) “solution providers” shared their approaches and processes broken down into building blocks of successful elements. Mr. Reynaldo Molina of COBSEA Secretariat presented two of the solutions considered, namely: 1) Strengthening capacities in coastal spatial planning; and 2) Regional strategy on coastal erosion management.

4-5 April 2014: Green Fins Review and Network Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand.

As one of the agreements made during the Project Inception Meeting, UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat together with MFF jointly organized a Review and Network Meeting of the MFF-supported project “Protecting Marine Ecosystems in MFF Countries Using the Green Fins Approach” in Bangkok, Thailand.

The meeting presented and discussed the progress made by project since the inception meeting including implementation concerns and planning for the next work program. The meeting also brought together the Green Fins international network for the sharing of experiences and strengthening future project outcomes internationally including developing possible Green Fins sustainability models. The network meeting was the first event of its kind and coincided with the 10 year anniversary of the establishment of Green Fins in 2004.

10-12 March 2014: Second Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters (IW) Regional Workshop for Asia and the Pacific, Manila, Philippines.

COBSEA Secretariat participated in the Second Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters (IW) Regional Workshop for Asia and the Pacific. Organized by the GEF International Waters: Learning Exchange and Resource Network (IW: LEARN) in collaboration with ADB, World Bank (WB) and PEMSEA, the workshop aimed to strengthen the performance of GEF IW projects through facilitating and promoting good policies and practices; and leveraging increased investments in habitat conservation, nutrient reduction and water resource use.

9-11 December 2013: Regional Concluding Workshop of the KOICA Yeosu Coastal Erosion Project, Pattaya, Thailand.

The COBSEA KOICA Yeosu Coastal Erosion Project finally concluded with the Regional Concluding Workshop organized by UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat after two years of implementation. The workshop provided project partners opportunity to present and share their accomplishments and outcomes on the initial implementation of the COBSEA Regional Strategy on Coastal Erosion particularly the national assessments on coastal erosion and the pilot interventions identified and prioritized including discussions on the next steps for implementation of pilot interventions.

The workshop provided an avenue for knowledge and information sharing and exchange between and among project partners, donors and other regional organizations on coastal erosion situations in participating countries, their policies and legal institutional mechanism dealing with coastal erosion, current and planned interventions, gaps and needs and the implementation of pilot interventions to address coastal erosion.

24-25 October 2013: Regional Concluding Workshop of UNEP/COBSEA Sida Coastal Spatial Planning Project, Bangkok, Thailand.

After almost four years of implementation, the Sida-supported project “Spatial Planning in the Coastal Zone – Disaster Prevention and Sustainable Development” finally concluded with the Regional Concluding Workshop organized by UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat. The workshop provided project partners opportunity to present and share their accomplishments and outcomes on the training and capacity building and adaptation activities implemented at the regional and national levels. The workshop will provide an avenue for knowledge and information sharing and exchange between and among project partners, donors and other regional organizations including exploring possible collaborations on coastal and marine spatial planning.

10-11 June 2013: Regional Inception Meeting of UNEP/COBSEA MFF Coastal Erosion Project, Pattaya, Thailand.

UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat organized a Project Inception Meeting of the MFF-supported project “Strengthening the Resilience of Coastal Communities, Ecosystems and Economies to Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Erosion” in Pattaya, Thailand. The Inception Meeting, which formally launched the project, provided an opportunity for project partners to re-visit and discuss the project document, and agreed on project implementation modalities such as administrative and reporting requirements. Twelve participants took part in the meeting representing the National Partner Institutions in Pakistan and Thailand, UNEP and MFF Secretariat.

30-31 May 2013: National Workshop on the Application of Marine and Coastal Spatial Planning in Vietnam: An Ecosystems based Management Approach, Haiphong, Vietnam.

COBSEA Secretariat participated in the Vietnam’s National Workshop on Marine and Coastal Spatial Planning Application. Mr. Reynaldo Molina presented a paper “Building capacity to apply coastal and marine spatial planning in COBSEA member countries”, which was based mainly on the activities and outcomes of the COBSEA Sida Coastal Spatial Planning Project.

26 March 2013: COBSEA 21st Intergovernmental Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand.

UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat convened the Twenty First Intergovernmental Meeting (IGM) of the Coordinating Body of the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) where representatives from Member States confirmed their full support to the revitalization of COBSEA with a resolution to have the secretariat hosted by a Member State and to significantly increase for the first time in years, the budget for the Body.

The meeting calls on Member States to submit their offer to host the secretariat and to undertake the necessary consultations at the national level on the increase in pledges, and to inform the Secretariat of their respective government decision on this matter.

18 March 2013: Annual Review Meeting (ARM) of COBSEA Sida Coastal Spatial Planning Project, Bangkok, Thailand.

The Annual Project Review Meeting of the Sida-supported project “Spatial Planning in the Coastal Zone – Disaster Prevention and Sustainable Development” was held at UNEP/ROAP Office. The meeting reviewed the project activities implemented in 2012 and discussed the project implementation in 2013 including the preparations for project closure in October 2013.

12-14 March 2013: Regional Inception Meeting of UNEP/COBSEA MFF Green Fins Project, Puerto Galera, Philippines.

UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat organized a Project Inception Meeting of the MFF-supported project “Protecting Marine Ecosystems in MFF Countries Using the Green Fins Approach” in Puerto Galera, Philippines. Together with the regional and national partners, the meeting reviewed, discussed and agreed on the project’s activities and deliverables including the workplan and implementation mechanisms. Eight participants took part in the meeting representing the implementation partners from the Reef World Foundation, National Partner Institutions in Maldives and Vietnam, UNEP/COBSEA and MFF Secretariat.

4-5 March 2013: Regional Inception Workshop of UNEP/COBSEA MFF Small Island Project, Bangkok, Thailand.

UNEP and COBSEA Secretariat together with MFF jointly organized a Project Inception Workshop of the MFF-supported project “Mapping and Enhancing Natural Resource Governance in Small Island Communities” in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop, which formally launched the project, reviewed, discussed and agreed on the project log frame including the work plan and implementation modalities. The participants that took part in the workshop included representatives from national partner institutions: UNDP Maldives, Seychelles National Parks Authority, IUCN Sri Lanka, and IUCN Thailand including the MFF National Coordinators from partner countries, UNEP and MFF Secretariat.

6-7 December 2012: Consultative Meeting on the Development of a Project Concept for the South China Sea SAP Implementation, Bangkok, Thailand.

The UNEP/DEPI/MFWEB and COBSEA Secretariat convened a regional consultation meeting to discuss the draft project concept (PIF) in detail and to technically agree on its scope and content and to discuss and agree on the level of co-financing that each GEF eligible country will have to provide in order to achieve the required level of co-financing. The participating countries were also requested to endorse the PIF by their respective GEF Operational Focal Points for submission to GEF.

24-26 September 2012: International Waters Science Conference 2012, Bangkok, Thailand.

The first-ever Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters Science Conference (IWSC 2012) provided a unique opportunity for local, regional and global scientific institutions and GEF IW projects to jointly look into opportunities to tackle some of the critical water issues over the next decade. The IWSC 2012, which took placed at the UN Conference Centre (UNCC), was organized by UNEP together with the Secretariat of the GEF & the GEF IW:LEARN project, UNU-INWEH, UNDP, with critical support from the UNESCAP and Sida, and other partners.

17-19 September 2012: East Asian Seas Regional Workshop on World Ocean Assessment, Bangkok, Thailand.

Marine scientists and experts from the region gathered in Bangkok to participate in the Regional Scientific and Technical Capacity Building Workshop on the Regular Process of the World Ocean Assessment. The workshop delivered a trial assessment for the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand regions based on a new methodology developed in Australia, which is considered today as an example for integrated marine assessment. The workshop was organized and supported jointly by UNEP, APN, UNESCO/IOC/WESTPAC, NOWPAP, COBSEA and UNEP/Grid Arendal.

31 July–1 August 2012: COBSEA Regional Inception Workshop of the KOICA Yeosu Project on Coastal Erosion, Bangkok, Thailand

The Inception Workshop, organized by COBSEA Secretariat has served as a “commencement event” for the implementation of the project. The meeting brought together relevant national authorities and experts from six participating countries as well as international experts from Canada, Singapore and Germany to discuss coastal erosion and coastal management issues in general and the Yeosu Project and its activities and requirements in particular.

14-18 May 2012: COBSEA Regional Train the Trainer Course on Spatial Planning in the Coastal Zone, Phuket, Thailand

Thirty Four (34) participants from six COBSEA participating countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) participated in the UNEP/COBSEA Regional Train-the-Trainer Course on Spatial Planning in the Coastal and Marine Zone in the EAS Region. 

The five-day training course supported by Sida provided instruction to future national trainers on how to integrate emerging issues such as adaptation to climate change and sea-level rise, and modern management approaches including ecosystem-based management, disaster-risk reduction and marine spatial planning, into national and sub-national spatial planning processes in the coastal and marine environments.
